| | 1 | Author: | Du Ponceau, Peter Stephen, 1760-1844 | | | | | Lawyer, philologist. Du Ponceau was an emigre to the American colonies in 1777, and served as an aide to Baron von Steuben in the War for Independence. In 1781 he was appointed secretary to Robert Livingston, Secretary for Foreign Affairs. After the declaration of peace, Du Ponceau took up law, specializing in matters of international law and trade. A life-long student of languages, Du Ponceau took up the systematic study of American Indian languages while in Philadelphia. Much of his linguistic work was done under the auspices of the American Philosophical Society. He served the Society as councilor, from 1801-1816; vice-president, 1816-1827; and president, 1828-1844.
